Six minute units were designed in an era of letters and appointments.  The timesheet system can’t capture the output of today’s workplace – I sent over 40 emails in my first hour today, all of which were ‘billable’ in the traditional sense.

Smaller firms I worked with from 1997 to 2002 would regularly achieve 70% productivity across the firm, and larger firms upwards of 60%. Median productivity has since declined from 56% in the GBU 2003 to 50% in 2015 with a small rebound to 52% in 2016.

Pricing, resource allocation and performance metrics tied to productivity are flawed by default and alternatives must be implemented.
